Vuse Solo
The Vuse Solo is a prefilled cartridge system from R.J. Reynolds Vapor, and on October 12, 2021 its power unit and Original 4.8% G1 and G2 cartridges became the first e-cigarettes the FDA ever authorized through the PMTA pathway.1 Vuse's FAQ lists the cartridges at 4.8% nicotine by weight and gives no puff count or cartridge volume.2

Vuse Solo Cartridges and Nicotine
Vuse Solo cartridges hold 4.8% nicotine by weight in nicotine salt form, according to Vuse's FAQ, and the Solo is a closed system: its cartridges work only in Solo devices.2
The FDA's 2021 order covered two cartridge versions, G1 and G2, both in Original. Vuse's public FAQ does not say how much e-liquid a cartridge holds.
Vuse Solo SmartLight and Charging
The Vuse Solo SmartLight is the indicator on the device: Vuse says it flashes white when the cartridge is running low and red when the battery is low.2 The Solo charges on the Vuse Solo USB charger and draws automatically when you inhale.
Vuse Solo FDA History
Vuse Solo FDA history starts with a first: on October 12, 2021 the agency authorized the Solo power unit with Original G1 and G2 cartridges, the first e-cigarettes to get a marketing order through the PMTA pathway, and denied 10 flavored Solo products the same day.1
The FDA denied the Solo's menthol 4.8% G1 and G2 cartridges on March 17, 2023, per the FDA's Solo menthol announcement.4 On February 2, 2024 the Fifth Circuit stayed the menthol denial orders for Alto, Vibe and Solo, which let Reynolds keep selling those menthol products, CSP Daily News reported; a stay is not an authorization.5
Vuse Solo Patent Royalty
The Vuse Solo G2 cartridge was part of Philip Morris International's patent case against Reynolds: a 2022 jury found it infringed and awarded $3.16 million, and in April 2023 a federal judge set a 2.2% royalty on Solo G2 instead of granting an injunction.6
Vuse Solo vs Vuse Alto
The Vuse Solo and the Vuse Alto differ in nicotine and in when they were authorized: the Solo comes in one strength, 4.8%, while Alto pods come in 1.8%, 2.4% and 5.0%.2 The Solo got its marketing order in October 2021, almost three years before the Alto in July 2024.
Solo cartridges fit only Solo devices, while an Alto takes both Alto and Vuse Pro pods. Both draw automatically when you inhale.
